Not only smart and incredibly talented, she co-founded the “Hollywood Canteen” during WWII, was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, possessed a killer glare, and a fabulous sense of style. If you want a “crash course” in her basic history, take a gander at her Wikipedia page, then go to a library!
Her career spanned a half-century, and despite her “demanding” nature, she was rewarded professionally with ten Academy Award nominations. One of my favorite of her films is “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane,” partially because she’s so delightfully cruel to Joan, and partially because she was brave enough to look old and ugly (hideous, really) at a time when actresses shunned those parts. (Aside: I think I may be “Baby Jane” for Halloween one year. Would it be completely inappropriate to get a wheelchair-bound companion for the night to play Blanche??)
I’m getting ahead of myself though, there are so many fabulous examples of her fashion throughout the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s! Take a look!
Also, recently I saw this clip of Bette making a guest appearance on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show in 1981! She is totally with it, looks incredible (LOVE the outfit), and says she used to hate her face! If Bette Davis hated her own face, that means we all need to chill the hell out and be happy with what we’ve got instead of being miserable until we get old, only to finally realize we are totally gorgous-mazing!
What are your thoughts on Bette? Her life, style, acting? Any interesting personal anecdotes?
