More Random Fun Because It’s Wednesday!

First up: Happy 58th birthday to the fabulous Whoopi Goldberg!

Whoopi AND a kitten!?! She's the best.

Whoopi AND a kitten!?! She’s the best.

This lady is hilarious, talented, multi-faceted, and possesses an incredibly personalized sense of style! In movies, she can be transformed into a frightened, shy abuse victim OR a hot Reno lounge singer! Her costumes are fantastic, but her own every-day style is also wonderfully unique!

This woman knows what you're thinking, how to make it funnier, and that it's all going to be ok. Maybe.

She has the monochromatic 80s look DOWN!

Strutting her "Downton" inspired style at the 65th Annual Tony Awards in 2011! I AM ALL ABOUT THE SIZE OF THAT HAT!

As for her fancier Oscar looks (both host and winner!):

Looking FABULOUS attending the 65th Annual Academy Awards in 1993!

WGPurple

Just look at the lining/inside of this dress!!! I wish tiny, Muppet Baby versions of her would spring out like “Mother Ginger” from the Nutcracker ballet!

WG1991

Another perfect gown choice, this time for her Oscar WIN for Best Supporting Actress as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost!

Looks pretty incredi-mazing as Queen Elizabeth I of England! WHOA.

62nd Annual Tony Awards in 2008, looking damn hot.

Some of the films Whoopi has done included some wonderful costumes and characters:

Her quiet beauty and desperation as "nappy headed" Seely in The Color Purple" won her an Oscar nomination in 1985.

I love most of the costumes for Oda Mae, but this pink and black suit/hat combo is AMAZING.

Most/all of the costumes from this movie are the bees knees, but this one emphasizes the utter importance of accessories.

The gritty, sexy mistress of a mob boss, Deloris van Cartier could wear the hell out of a gold sequined gown!

Speaking of Broadway, the stage version of Sister Act didn't spare the sequins, either!

So, thank you, Whoopi, for being amazing, unique, hilarious, talented and brave enough to kick ass all these years! (Every time she comes up in conversation around my father, he mentions that time he went to NYC in the late 70s/early 80s, and was prevented by his travelling companions from seeing her perform live. He’s never letting it go, and I wouldn’t either.) Let’s all just be glad she continued to thrive professionally so we could all reap the benefits!

Coming back from film to more Internet-centric happenings, but remaining in the realm of talented and funny women: in case you haven’t heard it, or read about it already, Allie Brosh, writer of the AMAZING blog “Hyperbole & a Half,” did an interview with NPR‘s Terry Gross on Fresh Air and you can totally listen to the whole thing online

It is a wonderful, extremely intimate interview in which Allie discusses her motivations, artistic talent, and her struggles with depression. WORTH A LISTEN! For anyone who’s already a fan of her blog, it is great fun to hear Allie reading in her own voice. People who don’t know about this blog, go there and read it immediately, then everyone should purchase her new book!

It includes some of her fabulous posts from the blog, and new funny things!

And finally, somewhere between film and the Internet, there’s television, which is about to get much more radical because several amazing lady comedians are getting shows! Anne Heche will star in a show that sounds like it’s about a lady manager and her quirky employees, plus additional lady-to-lady interactions with her snarky sister.  Cool? I dunno, we’ll see.

I don't necessarily consider Anne Heche a comedian, but Volcano was pretty hilarious.

Next up is the hysterical Molly Shannon, who is so fantastic at physical comedy it’s ridiculous. Deadline reports the show will be about a professional woman who’s dealing with an unemployed (stay-at-home) pregnant daughter. I’m not into the whole pregnancy thing, and am nervous about Molly Shannon playing the “straight” role ever, but again, I’m open to the ridiculous possibilities.

That’s right, squeeze out the good stuff.

Last, but certainly not least, Kristen Schaal!!! A Renaissance woman, and inventor of the best “sexy” Halloween costume EVER, has an agreement with ABC to write and star in a show about a “small town misfit” who goes on trial for murder! This sounds INCREDIBLE! I don’t know if my outrageously high expectations will be met, but considering some of the other hilarious things Kristen’s been involved with, I’m inclined to think my mind will be exploded into gooey, person-glitter due to the all-consuming awesomeness.

I will remain this excited until I see said show.

So, enjoy your Wednesday, and may it be full of other amazing lady-centric news to share!
